I’ve often thought that the pinnacle of our awareness of the presence of God in our lives is the ability to hear His whisper. Above the noise of the crowds and the chaos, we attune our senses to discern His still small voice; His gentle whisper.
But there is a level of spiritual sensitivity to which we’ve given little consideration; the ability to discern His walking; to recognise His footsteps; to know He’s there, not because we hear His familiar tone, but because we know His gait, His stride pattern, His walk.
It’s said of Adam and Eve, ‘the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day.’ What was it about His stride pattern, the weight of His steps, His movement through the garden that meant that the first humans could sense His presence without seeing Him?
In my home, I am so familiar with the footsteps of my family that I can tell who is in the house even when they aren’t speaking. I can discern their stride as they pace up and down the stairs. I don’t need to hear a voice, I just know their steps.
Is it possible to do the same with God?
Is it possible to hear His walking even when you can’t hear His whisper?
Duncan, thank you sharing this. I have not thought about hearing God’s walking steps. This is really interesting. I have heard about hearing God speaking, knowing His thought/will etc., but not the decibel of His footsteps. Thank you for sharing this.
